Steven: Thanks for the informative drill. I find it very helpful but i was wondering if you can make a full swing (at playing tempo) using that dowel?
Thanks again!

1Cleandude: Thanks for the comment. I always recommend practicing the fullswing using “pitch” style shots. I find it easier to grasp the correct “feeling” since a pitch shot tends to be slower. I would not recommend using a dowel for the fullswing because there could be too much vibration from the dowel (it might defeat the purpose). But, as I said, if you are practicing this drill or any other, always practice with slow swings to help get the correct feeling. Good Luck – Steven

Thanks for the comment. But what’s wrong with moving your head? It may not be a bad thing unless you move your head counter to the direction of the swing. Tell me a bit more about your situation.

Just remember what the purpose of the swing is and focus more on playing the game with “pretty” swing that you got now. You can always improve YOUR technique but I would not ask many people for advice. Pick a coach and stick with that coach.

Steven, I’ve been working on this drill for a few months to improve my impact, get more compression as i tend to release my wrists hence very slappy iron play e.g hardly any divots, the proble is when i try this without the aid i shank the ball practically with every iron that i try it with, any tips? many thanks steve

@sghowie (1) Taking Divots – Make some practice swings to feel the club lightly striking the ground and look for the bottom of the swing. It should be just after ball contact (2) Shanking – Heel shots that usually result in having too much weight on the toes, thus moving ball contact more toward the heel of the club. Practice with a board just on the outside of the ball line to maintain a neutral swing path. Good Luck.

Great Tip – I have also learned that you need to get the entire torso over the left leg for best power lag/compression.
One question though because I hear teachers and pros give conflicting advice on this subject, how open should your left hip be at impact?I have heard 20 degrees 45 degrees or even face the ball.Does it differ from club to club or is there a uniform angle of openess at impact?
Thanks

@secretogolf Thanks for the question. How much does the left hip open depends on the clubface and swing style. If the swing style is more around (i.e one plane), the face is open less and thus the left hip will open more. If the swing style is more vertical (i.e. two plane), the face is more open and thus the left hip will open less – to allow for more swinging of the body. Exact numbers can really only be measured using a 3-D system. It would differ from club to club because (CONT)

@McDanielGolf (CONT) …each club is different in how much it swings up/down or around. I can not imagine that there is a uniform angle at impact because pretty much all TOUR players are different. Hope this helps.
