Barack Obama’s golf swing reveals he’s an athlete, a duffer and fun to play with By Michael Bamberger Senior Writer, Sports Illustrated Published: December 24, 2008 Golf.com has performed an important service. It has posted five photographs, taken by AP photographer Gerald Herbert, that shows President-elect Barack Obama on vacation in Hawaii playing golf. This is invaluable as we all know that nothing, not even a CNN special called “Obama Revealed,” reveals the soul as ruthlessly and efficiently as how one plays the old Scottish game. John F. Kennedy nearly made a hole-in-one on the short par-3 15th at Cypress Point (the best-smelling hole in all of golf, if you like the mix of eucalyptus and brackish ocean water) while running for the presidency in 1960. Kennedy, considered by presidential golfing historians to be by far the most skilled of our golf-playing presidents, was relieved to see the ball stay out. He was trying to succeed Dwight Eisenhower as president, and not as First Golfer. The game then wasn’t the populist activity it has become. Kennedy, foolishly, allowed himself to be photographed taking a golf swing in fancy loafers, no socks. Still, he won West Virginia. But Obama does not have to run from his golf. The guess here is that he’s an athlete and a duffer and fun to play with. @stme2008: I heard this morning on the radio that Obama has already taken more golfing trips/outings than Bush did in this entire two terms. Did I hear this correctly? Did anyone else hear this?? If this is true (and I know Obama has been golfing A LOT), it is more evidence of the hypocrisy from the Left. They wailed about Bush golfing during a bad economy!! Can you believe this double-standard?? I guess I can.

@jbranstetter04 I agree too, but the thing is, so many Obama supporters were the same ones criticizing Bush for playing so much golf when Obama is playing WAY WAY WAY more golf and taking far more leisure time than Bush ever did. I agree they need leisure time because of the pressures of the job, but the Obama people are such hypocrites about this. He’s setting all sorts of rcords for leisure of President and his supporters criticized Bush for it.

@tobiasrobbins72 After 9-11 Bush stopped golfing because he didn’t want to show such a public display of himself having fun while the troops were in other countries dying. It might in a way be worse for Obama because I don’t think he golfed before becoming President and now he is. And we must remember that Afghanistan is now his war because he ordered 30,000 more troops to go there instead of pulling all of the troops out. There are many different ways of looking at this.

Why are Obamabots being so defensive of Obama playing golf in timmes of distress when they were all over Bush for doing the same when Buch NEVER golfed nearlyt as much as Obama did while in office (Obama eclipsed the golfing tital of BUsh’s entire 8 year tenure in his first 10 months or so in office.

@tobiasrobbins72 The question is why does he golf at all? He sucks at it. I think he just wants to fit in. Presidents have golfed since at least Eisenhower, so if he golfs, then he is just like the rest and he will be more readily excepted by Americans, he thinks. But he’s the President, elected by the majority of the electoral college, so that is that, he can do as he pleases. I bet he still wakes up every morning saying to himself, “I can’t believe they were sucked into this fantasy of mine”.
